Mgoma dreams of professional football in the big leagues

ALEXANDRA – A young soccer player dreams of making a name for himself in future in the big leagues of the world.

An exciting future soccer star is in the making in the name of Liyema Mgoma who captains the Zenzeleni school team in the annual Discovery Cup tournament currently underway in Alexandra.

Mgoma (12) is currently in the incubator room of one of Alex’s most colourful football clubs, Real Madrid under the watchful eye of astute coach Mocks Maseko, who has unearthed the likes of Dineo ‘Waka Waka’ Ntsimane.

Ntsimane is currently in the development ranks of National First Division team Highlands Park, better known as the Lions of the North.

Mgoma comes hot on the heels of the sensational Waka Waka, who Alex News saw in the same tournament two years back while playing for his former school, MC Weiler, which they won.

Like Waka Waka, Mgoma is a busy body of the Zenzeleni team and forms the core of the favourites to win this year’s tournament after coming third last year. Mgoma who is in Grade 7 and will attend KwaBhekilanga High School next year, started playing in the Discovery Alex U12 Schools League in 2014 and said he looked forward to his school team being crowned champions this year.

Mgoma added that his team settled for bronze last year under controversial circumstances when they were denied a legitimate goal by the referee that could have easily seen them victorious in the tournament. “We’re giving it all we have this year to lift the trophy,” he told Alex News.

He cut his teeth in grassroots development football with the now defunct Leeds United before joining Malandela Mighty Heroes and now Real Madrid.

Orlando Pirates is his favourite team in the premiership and he admires former Mamelodi Sundowns player Keagan Dolly. He would like to see himself playing professional football one day for the Buccaneers, to represent Bafana Bafana and also play overseas. “I will work hard to achieve my dreams.”

Mgoma also dreams of becoming a pilot one day.

He was born in Alex though his parents come from Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape.
