New Mandela memoirs book to be launched in Houghton

A new book about the former State president and international icon, Nelson Mandela, is expected to be launched on 17 October.

The book, Dare to Linger – The Presidential Years, will be launched at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton.

Speaking on a national broadcaster on Morning Live, author of the book, Mandla Langa, described the book as exhilarating.

Langa said the book speaks mostly about Mandela’s years as a president of the South African democratic society.

The author, who is famously known for writing fiction books said writing the book was trickier as he had to depend solemnly on the notes which were written by Mandela.

“It is not like I sat down with Mandela and talked, but instead I had to depend on the manuscripts which were written by the man himself,” said Langa.

“I had to work within strict guidelines to ensure that the voice of the book is clear and reflected the actual thoughts of the writer whom is Nelson Mandela… this is a labour of love.”

Verne Harris, director of archives at the foundation, said they started working on this project about 19 years ago.

Harris said the process was quite complex adding that the book is also holistic as it is both political and personal.

“This is a political book but is also personal. It focuses on his personality and how he treated his staff in the office,” said Harris.

“It talks also about how he brought about unity in the country as well as diversity in general. It is a deliberate political intervention. In his memoirs Mandela wanted to reflect on the challenges and achievements… the book gives us inspiration.”

At the launch, there will be a dialogue which will include a discussion between Barbra Masekela and Langa facilitated by Iman Rapetti. There will also be an exhibition of unique photographs by Keith Bernstein.
