Social soccer takes off

ALEXANDRA - Six-a-side social soccer takes root in Alexandra.

The Alexandra Youth Tournament, a six-a-side annual soccer tournament, is making inroads in the social soccer scene in Alexandra such that organisers are now considering a social league in the township.

According to one of the organisers of the tournament, Zwelakhe Nkosi, the tournament was started in 2015 after it was noticed there was an increase of delinquent youth loitering on the streets and most of them ended up on the wrong side of the law and others fell victim to drugs.

“We hold the tournament on an annual basis in Alexandra and of late we have taken it to Limpopo as well where it is also gradually picking up,” Nkosi said.

The 3rd edition of the tournament was held at the Football 4 Hope grounds at the Altrec Stadium in Alexandra’s East Bank section on 2 September, with 10 teams coming from Alex, Benoni, Midrand, Thembisa, Soweto, the Vaal and Limpopo.

Nkosi said they were currently negotiating for a venue to host the tournament twice a month and possibly organise a league.

“All this is dependent on sponsors as well coming on board. If we could get some sponsors on board, I am sure the tournament-cum league would catch like wild fire.”

In the 2017 edition, Nkosi said they had partnered with Golden Furniture and Greenfields and offered a prize of R5 000 to the winners. “If we can attract more sponsors, we could increase the prize money and also offer prizes to runners-up too.”
