Skeen Primary School’s security woes highlighted by Alex News may soon be a thing of the past after palisade fencing was erected to protect the premises.

The security issue came to the fore during a visit by the DA Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho who also visited Minerva secondary and Pholosho primary schools on 23 August. Skeen’s premises was found lacking with part of the boundary fence broken down, gate padlocks cut off and the school grounds being used as a passage by the public. Ramulifho found many windows and ceilings broken by criminals who apparently break into the premises on weekly basis. There was also a shortage of desks and chairs. School principal Phillemon Mashishi said some of the classrooms were broken into the same week after Ramulifho’s visit.
Mashishi commended the Joburg East District of the Gauteng Department of Education for the palisade fence.
“Teachers and pupils will feel more secure, the infrastructure protected and classrooms fully secured if the windows and ceilings are also fixed,” Mashishi said adding that the department also delivered chairs and desks which were still not adequate.
He worried that the burglars mostly targeted essential learning items such as stationery, text books and paper. He requested the police to conclude long standing investigations of several burglaries and also encourage the public to continue to report criminals.
Mashishi added that the department was engaging with Alex police station management to ensure proactive security around schools.
