Two Alex teachers die

ALEXANDRA – Education stakeholders mourn Skeen Primary and East Bank High teachers.

Alex schools, residents and the Joburg East District office of the Gauteng Department of Education are mourning the deaths of two exemplary teachers who succumbed to illnesses recently.

Junita Kgomo who dedicated 20 years of her life to teaching at East Bank High School was laid to rest at West Park Cemetery on 22 August while Edith Kubheka who had moved to the district office after a long teaching career at Skeen Primary School was buried a week earlier in Alex.

Kgomo’s colleague and member of the school’s bereavement committee, Phylis Kekana, said her passing left a difficult void to fill in the English and life sciences departments. “She was a disciplinarian, hard worker, teachers’ representative on the school governing body and the uniform committee,” said Kekana. “She made her voice heard in all engagements she was involved in.” Her other inputs were on environmental issues including gardening to complement the school feeding programme and to impart self-reliance skills in children.

Skeen Primary principal Phillemon Mashishi lauded the late Kubheka as an exemplary education specialist who they would remain proud of for many years to come, hence her promotion to the district office.

“Her over 20 years of dedication to the school contributed immensely to arts, culture, music and sports and set a good foundation for the school’s many achievements shown by the many trophies won,” Mashishi said.

Her other contributions were to literacy development of the Grade R pupils and the school’s environment programme. Mashishi and Kekana wished the two teachers an eternal rest in peace.
