ALEXANDRA – A man was remanded in custody after selling a friend's car for a song.

An Alex man who allegedly sold a friend’s vehicle without permission was remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation.

The 44-year-old suspect allegedly sold the victim’s old Nissan 1400 in Alex for R7 000 without permission and was paid R3 000. The balance of R4 000 was to be paid on receipt of the vehicle’s registration book.

The owner of the vehicle, who lives in Bronkhorstspruit, apparently asked the suspect to get the vehicle fixed when it broke down in the township on 1 April.

The following day, she called again and he promised that he would get a mechanic to fix the vehicle. A few days later, she called again to check on the progress and was asked to be patient.

After several subsequent telephone calls from the owner of the vehicle, the suspect stopped answering her calls until 16 August when he called and asked the victim to meet him at the Alex Police Station.

When she arrived, he took her and the police officers to a man who explained that the suspect had sold the vehicle to him and that he had already paid R3 000 and would pay the balance of R4 000 after receiving the registration book.

The suspect was arrested and the vehicle was taken to the police pound.
