Alex marathon kicks off

ALEXANDRA – Youth NPO launches Alex's own marathon.

Alex’s inaugural marathon got off to a good start at the Altrec Sports Complex on 19 August despite the nippy weather which was presumed to have discouraged some of the 110 participants who had registered for it.

The initiative is the brainchild of youth non-profit organisation, Creative Minds Movement, which is a front-runner of several social, economic and educational innovations in the township such as pop-up markets and entrepreneurship workshops. It kicked off early with a 5km walk and ended with energy-sapping aerobics for the 10 to 55-year-old participants.

Despite other hitches, Sakhile Shabangu of the organisation lauded the event and pioneering participants saying the effort would over time, match similar established events such as the Soweto Marathon and 702 Radio’s Walk the Talk.

“The idea was inspired by the fun event for senior citizens organised by the city council which is intended to extend the life expectancy of the residents,” said Shabangu. “Keeping them fit will reduce their dependency on medicines and they will be proud of their healthy bodies if they adhere to a healthy diet.”

He urged for financial and other support to complement the initiative and said small businesses could also benefit from the sale of health products, and it would attract tourists from other provinces and countries for the benefit of the economically-depressed township.

“Improved marketing and sponsorship will also enhance social cohesion in the township and encourage other downstream businesses.”

Shabangu urged the participants to sustain their health by joining establish walking clubs which were for free and set up their own walking initiatives. He asked local gyms to also partner the event in the interest of residents’ health.
