Primestars Marketing’s popular eduCate matric maths and science revision programme was launched at Tsogo Sun’s Crown Plaza Hotel in Rosebank.
The programme, sponsored by Capitec Foundation, Sasria, Telkom Foundation and Bidvest Steiner, is in its 7th year and seeks to assist thousands of matrics, especially in disadvantaged schools, in preparing them for their final year-end exams by
utilising Ster-Kinekor cinemas as theatres of learning.
Maths and physical science are acknowledged as two of the most important subjects in the school curriculum, not only because they open various opportunities for further study but they equip young people with the flexible intellectual and reasoning skills that are essential in the 21st century.
Unfortunately, South Africa continues to trail other countries in the areas of maths and physical science education and children in disadvantaged areas have been conditioned to believe that maths and science are difficult subjects and hence they do not put effort into doing them.
“The burning issue at hand is that there is a dramatic shortage of skills in the hard sciences, and if we’re to transform the country’s business sector, we must start by educating the youth in maths and sciences,” said Martin Sweet, managing director of Primestars Marketing, during his address at the launch.
The programme is comprises 10 pre-recorded revision sessions, five of which are in maths and the other five in science.
Township schools are invited annually to participate in the programme with the support of the Department of Basic Education.
The schoolchildren are then registered and transported from their schools to the designated cinema complexes and back to their schools after the screenings.
Capitec Foundation’s head, Neptal Khoza said, “Capitec Foundation is committed to supporting education initiatives that help improve learners’ performance in maths and science.
“We support the Primestars’ eduCate revision programme as it improves learners’ readiness for the matric exams in an unconventional and innovative way.”
Cedric Masondo, Sasria SOC Ltd’s managing director said, “The shortage of skills in maths and science-related career fields continues to limit career choices for young people in our country. It is therefore important that we invest in maths and science to ensure that young people are equipped with the necessary skills that will expose them to a wide variety of careers especially scarce skills which will play a huge role in the sustainable development of our economy.”
