Alex police are investigating the murder of a man and the rape of his girlfriend by an armed suspect after midnight on 14 May.
A spokesperson for Alex police, Captain Allie Kodisang said according to the rape victim, the suspect allegedly intercepted the couple as they walked from Nobuhle Hostel to East Bank. He allegedly ordered them to the Jukskei River where he shot and killed the man and raped the woman – without a condom. Afterwards, he searched the woman and took her cellphone as well as a cellphone from the deceased’s pocket. The suspect then disappeared and the rape victim was assisted by some residents to report to the Alex Police Station.
Spent cartridges were found at the scene. The body of the deceased – identified as Phelelani Mavundla – was taken to a government mortuary by the provincial government’s forensic team. In wasn’t specified whether the rape victim received any counselling or support.
