PSL congratulates Absa Premiership champs, Bidvest Wits
JOBURG - Premier Soccer League congratulates Bidvest Wits for winning the 2016/17 premiership.
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has congratulated newly-crowned 2016/17 Absa Premiership champions, Bidvest Wits.
Bidvest Wits won their first ever Absa Premiership title since its inception in 1996 following a 2–0 victory against Polokwane City at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on 17 May.
The club, which is also fondly known as the Students or Clever Boys because of their ownership links with the University of the Witwatersrand before Bidvest took controlling shares a few years back, has now accumulated an unassailable 60 points with only one game remaining.
PSL acting chief executive, Mato Madlala heaped praises on the Clever Boys. “The 2016/17 championship race will go down as one of the most impressive and highly contested battles in recent history,” he said. “I would like to commend all the clubs that put a spirited challenge for top honours.
“At the end of the day, there can only be one winner and this time it is Bidvest Wits who earned the top prize. We would like to congratulate the club for this historic achievement. I’m certain that they will savour this moment for a very long time.”
Mamelodi Sundowns were the defending champions and have won the premiership a record seven times. Downs have also won the Nedbank Cup four times and hold the joint record for three National Football League championships.
They are the only South African team to compete in the Fifa Club World Cup and are the reigning Confederation of African Football (Caf) African champions and 2017 Super Cup champions. This makes the Brazilians the most successful football club in the country.
The PSL and Absa will hand over the Absa Premiership trophy to Bidvest Wits on 27 May at the FNB Stadium.
