No beating around the bush
JOBURG – Acornbush United threaten to upset Kaizer Chiefs in their Nedbank Cup last 16 clash.
Second division side Acornbush United has warned Kaizer Chiefs against being overconfident in their Nedbank Cup clash at Kabokweni Stadium outside Mbombela in Mpumalanga on 9 March.
Acornbush was formed in 1987 and resuscitated in 2012 after a few years in the wilderness, and coach MacDonald Makhubedu warned Amakhosi not to be too confident as they could also go the Cape Town City way.
Makhubedu was referring to his team’s recent slaying of Cape Town City FC in the cup that has become famously known as the ‘David versus Goliath Cup’.
“I am going to field the same team that did the job against City and I can assure the people they [the team] have all it takes to do the job for me against Chiefs as well,” Makhubedu said.

He added that he wanted his boys to go out there and enjoy themselves in the game and show what they were made of. “I am not saying we are going to cause an upset but I am merely warning Chiefs not to be too overconfident.
“I have a number of former players who used to ply their trade in various teams in the Absa Premiership, including Chiefs itself. I know they are a big team with a rich history but all that may count for nothing on the field of play.
“We have a number of our players in the Chiefs reserve team, but I will not use those players in this match as we’re gunning for the ABC Motsepe League playoffs. I will not field the first team players as we’re looking [towards] the bigger picture, and that bigger picture is the promotion… to the National First Division.”

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela said he did not want to get into a slanging match with his counterpart and would offer him all his respect on and off the field. “We’re treating it like any other match and will work towards attaining a positive result,” he said.
“We’re not going to say they are minnows and they play in a lower league, as you know in football anything can happen, as it has happened to Chiefs before.”
