A driver was sentenced by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to seven years, with five years wholly suspended for the theft of tyres from his employer.

Wisdom Ncube (26) was found guilty of stealing tyres on two occasions from his employer at a Lonehill-based motor dealership earlier this year.

The theft was discovered by his co-workers who arrived on the premises for duty on 27 February. They noticed four tyres missing from a trailer and cut chains which were used to secure the tyres.

While the matter was still under police investigation, Ncube went to the dealership again at 9pm on 7 March and called the manager to inform him that the alarm had been activated and that security was not on-site.

When asked what he was doing at work at that time, as he was not called for duty, Ncube claimed to have been passing by and wanted water for his vehicle which was boiling.

The manager informed the accused that a security company would be dispatched. On arrival, the manager was informed by a security guard, who had arrived earlier, that the Ncube had been trying to steal tyres.
