ALEXANDRA – Police arrest 2 and investigate 4 attempted murders in a week.

Alex police have detained two men in connection with two attempted murders. They are also investigating two similar cases which occurred in the course of one week.

Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Allie Kodisang said a suspect, who is due in court soon, was arrested in connection with the attempted murder of David Nyirenda, which occurred on 4th Avenue at 6pm on 13 March. When the investigating officer reached the crime scene, Nyirenda had already been taken by ambulance to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital

In the second incident, the next day at about 11.30pm, another male victim’s home was shot at by unknown and wanted suspects. The victim had been drinking beer with a friend next to his shack on 3rd Avenue when he decided to go and sleep.

After closing the door, shots were allegedly fired into the shack where his family was residing. The victim hid behind a sofa. When the firing stopped, he checked and found four bullet holes in the wall of the shack and three others in a Toyota Avanza parked nearby. No one was in the vehicle.

On the 15 March, another suspect in a gang of three was arrested in connection with an attempted murder, which occurred at 2am at a 20th Avenue home. His alleged accomplices are wanted. A female with two younger siblings was awakened by screams coming from their brother’s room. They opened the door, which they quickly closed when they saw three men, one of them allegedly holding a gun in the brother’s room.

As the siblings closed the door, a shot rang out and a bullet hit and injured one of the siblings in the hand. After the assailants had fled, two TV sets and two cellphones were missing. The injured child was treated at a clinic and the suspect was later arrested.

The fourth incident occurred at 5.30pm on 18 March at 3rd Avenue. A man was shot and injured in the thigh and hand.

It is said that the suspect had demanded his pressing iron, which the victim was fixing and also R20 which he owed him. When he was told the iron wasn’t ready and that he would get the money days later, the suspect allegedly became enraged and insulted the victim before leaving, after warning the victim that he would return.

He did return 15 minutes later, and again allegedly insulted the victim after repeating his demands. Friends of the victim offered to pay the debt but the suspect allegedly took out a gun and fired at the victim, inflicting the injuries. The suspect ran away and the victim was taken to the Alex Clinic for treatment.
