ALEXANDRA – Alex police on a manhunt for three armed and dangerous men who escaped after shootouts and a high-speed chase.

Alex police are on the lookout for three suspects who shot and injured a police officer after a high-speed chase and shootout on 28 March in the early afternoon.

Two vehicles were involved, one a Golf 5 suspected to have been stolen, and an Audi Q7 which was hijacked during the chaos. A rifle and pistol were recovered from the Golf and another rifle from the Audi.

Police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the suspects are regarded as armed and dangerous.

The chase, which lasted until late afternoon, ended at a block of flats on 11th Avenue in Alex with the suspects evading arrest by a contingent of members of flying squad, Alex police and Metro police officers who were supported by a police chopper hovering above.

Kodisang said the police officer who was shot in the shoulder in the shootout was treated at a hospital and released.

The suspects who were in the Golf 5 and shooting at the police were chased from Yeoville for an unspecified crime. They seemingly skipped some roadblocks on their way into the M1 freeway. They exited into Collette Drive and then onto the Old Pretoria Road as they headed to Alex with police in pursuit.

Audi recovered from high speed chase.

Kodisang said the suspects were eventually cornered on Homestead Road in Bramley where more shooting ensued and the police officer was injured, but they still managed to escape. They abandoned the Golf at the corner of Breytenbach and 4th Streets in Wynberg and hijacked the Audi which they drove into Alex and abandoned at the block of flats where there was a further shootout before they disappeared.

Witnesses on the scene said the suspects who were armed, hurriedly parked the Audi and disappeared into the flats with the police in pursuit and later joined by the chopper. Others claimed that after an exchange of fire, the suspects seemingly tried but failed to hijack another vehicle before running away on foot.

The involved vehicles were taken to the police pound for analysis.
