UPDATE: Alex balaclava rapist gang member found guilty in South Gauteng High Court

ALEXANDRA – Member of the terror balaclava gang found guilty of 16 rape and several robbery charges.

 

A member of the balaclava (duo) gang, who terrorised Alex residents between 2010 and 2014 and were arrested in 2015 was found guilty on 7 March in the South Gauteng High Court.

Josias Mkansi was found guilty on 14 counts of rape, two of compelled rape and several counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances. The date for his sentencing will be pronounced on 24 March.

Meanwhile, his accomplice Sija Mabiletsa who pleaded guilty to 76 cases of rape, compelled rape, robbery and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm had his case postponed to 15 March to enable the judge more time to assess the plea documentation.

The two who were remanded in custody, are said to have concealed their faces by wearing balaclavas when they attacked their victims at gunpoint in Jukskei Park, Eastbank Cemetery, Kwa-Bhekilanga Sports Grounds and other secluded places.

The gang assaulted couples and forced them to have sex regardless of their relationship, before they also raped the females, mostly between 13 and 38 years of age.

They were arrested after a victim’s phone was traced to one of them and from DNA evidence.

Some of the victims and their relatives are said to have sobbed when the cases were heard.
