ALEXANDRA – Man sentenced for corruption after pleading guilty to bribing a police officer.

A man was found guilty of corruption by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a R3 000 fine.

Ibrahim Ngongo pleaded guilty to bribing a police officer with R590 to release three of his colleagues who were arrested and detained for allegedly possessing gemstones without a licence.

The three were arrested at midday on 23 February at a shopping centre in Olifantsfontein, Midrand. This after the police were informed about them behaving suspiciously after being dropped off by someone in a car who then sped off, attracting attention.

Police arrived and searched them. They were found with tanzanite, ruby, aquamarine and other gemstones which were sent for testing to determine their identity, quantity and value.

They will appear in court after the investigation is concluded.
