Security helps thieves steal equipment worth R200 000

ALEXANDRA – Security guard Jabulani Ndlovu allegedly gave inside information to three men who broke into his workplace strongroom and stole items worth R200 000.

A security guard who allegedly helped thieves break into a strongroom at his workplace in Centurion last year to steal tablets, computers, radios and speakers with a total value of R200 000 has pleaded guilty to robbery charges.

On the night of 9 July, three men tied a security guard up, locked him inside a toilet, and forced their way into the strongroom at the building site where the accused, Jabulani Ndlovu, also worked as a guard.

Ndlovu’s colleague has testified in the Alex Magistrates’ Court that, while he was tied up, he overheard one of the robbers speaking on a cellphone and telling someone, presumably Ndlovu, that they had subdued him. Shortly after hearing the sound of a vehicle driving into the premises, he had heard another voice, which he recognised as that of the accused, telling the robbers to hurry in case security supervisors arrived.

The colleague was untied by police who later arrested the accused at his home in Melville. The three thieves were arrested after Ndlovu allegedly pointed them out, but they were later released due to insufficient evidence.

Ndlovu has been denied bail pending his sentencing on 27 February.
