Cellphone snatcher sentenced to five years

ALEXANDRA – Man claims he was merely hitting on a woman, yet admits he robbed her.

An 18-year-old was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for robbing a woman of her cellphone in Sandton on 2 February.

Talent Bhebhe accosted the woman as she was walking to work in the morning and used a stun gun to frighten her. As he was fleeing, community members chased and caught him, and handed him to Sandton police.

In mitigation of sentence, the accused claimed he was merely hitting on the woman and did not mean to take her phone.
