Employee steals, sells employer’s jewellery for R2 000

ALEXANDRA – Trusted worker steals and sells employer's jewellery for a pittance at pawnshops.

A Diepsloot man who confessed to the police about stealing jewellery from his employer’s home was denied bail and was remanded in custody by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation and sentencing.

Jabulani Ndlovu (32) was left to care for the Kyalami home by the homeowner when she went on holiday on 22 December last year.

When the homeowner returned, she could not open her jewellery box as she could not find its keys and had to get a locksmith to open it. Once opened, the homeowner found that gold earrings, bangles, charms, a watch, a necklace, opals and diamond stones, all valued at R136 000, were missing.

The homeowner immediately suspected the accused and reported the incident to the police. The employer took police officers to the suspect and he confessed to stealing and then selling the jewellery to pawn shops in Randburg.

Some of the jewellery was recovered at one of the pawn shops which the suspect had sold to them for R2 000.

Details: Alex Police Station 011 321 7600.
