Kgololo academy makes amazing strides in educating bright Alex kids

ALEXANDRA – New school proves its impact through education upliftment of young Alexandrians.

Kgololo Academy, in the heart of impoverished Alex, is a typical example of the success of applying good quality education in any situation in order to uplift humankind.

The school enrolled its first Grade R and Grade 1 pupils in 2015, and it adheres to the education department-stipulated pupil/teacher ratio.

Due to their belief in the effectiveness of small classes, the school has progressed from 40 pupils in 2015.

  • In 2015 it had 40 pupils after 14 enrolled for pre-Grade R and 26 for Grade R
  • Last year it had 82 pupils, with 28 in Grade R and two classes 27 pupils in Grade 1
  • 146 enrolled this year, with 30 in Grade R, two classes of 30 each in Grade 1, and two classes of 28 each in Grade 2.

“All our kids met and will continue to meet their grade expectations. This was complimented with parents’ voluntary involvement at three school conferences annually, and their participation at special events, in office work, cooking and other responsibilities,” said Waahida Tolbert-Mbatha, the school’s founder and principal.

Mbatha told Alex News in a previous interview that the school was a preparatory platform for university and professional life for the pupils who, despite their tender age, receive occasional motivation on life and potential careers.

There is a bigger staff complement this year, with two teachers per grade to enhance the school’s performance.

Mbatha said there was now a counsellor who dealt with the children’s challenges.

To date, the school had not experienced any major fee defaulters. Parents pay R850 a month for Grade R and R950 for the other grades.

She thanked the education department and other stakeholders for their support. Parents vouched for the school, with Emely Mushayi and Portia Ngwenya saying the school’s approach was great. “You only need to look at its Facebook page,” said Ngwenya.
