Attemped rape and robbery suspect remanded in custody

ALEX – He was apparently arrested after neighbours pinned him down and beat him to a pulp.

A robbery and attempted rape suspect who was beaten severely by residents before being handed over to police was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

He allegedly committed the offences at about midnight on 10 September last year, and his two accomplices are still at large. The woman victim, on hearing a persistent noise coming from the door, initially dismissed it as rats chewing at the door. But after switching the lights on and walking towards the door, three men broke it open and forcibly entered the room.

Struck by fear, the victim retreated to her bed and tried to wake her boyfriend up. The suspect allegedly pointed a gun at her and grabbed R500 from a drawer while his accomplices were helping themselves to a TV set and two cellphones. The boyfriend woke up with a start and the suspect allegedly ordered him not to look at them, and he complied.

After the suspect’s accomplices had exited the room with the stolen loot, he allegedly ordered her to undress and fondled her while unzipping his pants. The boyfriend intervened and, after a tussle, the gun fell from the suspect’s hand. Meanwhile, the woman opened a window and summoned the neighbours who came and subdued the suspect and called the police after assaulting him.

It was later discovered that the firearm was a toy gun. The total value of the stolen items was R6 000.
