Two Alex girls shine in 2016 matric exams

ALEXANDRA – Alex girls excel with seven distinctions in 2016 matric exams.

Two Alex girls joined other matriculants countrywide who achieved a clean sweep with distinctions in all seven subjects they wrote in the 2016 examinations.

In so doing, they debunked the ‘good for nothing’ myth about this materially impoverished township and also the gender stereotype. The bright sparks, Shihluke Mswanganye (18) of Kwabhekilanga Secondary – the perennial best performing school in Alex – scored 97 per cent in economics, 96 per cent in accounting, 91 per cent in mathematics, 90 per cent in business studies, 90 per cent in Xitsonga home language, 86 per cent in life orientation and 85 per cent in English.

Kholofelo Mohale (18) of Realogile Secondary School, took it a step further with a 100 per cent pass mark in the dreaded mathematics, 94 per cent in geography, 92 per cent in life sciences, 90 per cent in physical science, 85 per cent in English language, 83 per cent in Sepedi home language and 82 per cent in life orientation.

Mswanganye’s high-achieving counterparts were:

  • Khensani Nukeli (18) with 85 per cent in life sciences, 79 per cent in Xitsonga home language, 78 per cent in English second language, 78 per cent in life orientation, 74 per cent in geography, 72 per cent in physical science and 62 per cent in mathematics.
  • Nyeleti Ngobeni (19) with 84 per cent in accounting, 82 per cent in economics, 79 per cent in life orientation, 78 per cent in Xitsonga home language, 73 per cent in English second language, 79 per cent in life orientation and 64 per cent in accounting.
  • Makhale Tlaka (18) with 85 per cent in life sciences, 84 per cent in mathematics, 82 per cent in physical science, 80 per cent in geography, 77 per cent in Sepedi home language, 73 per cent in life orientation and 71 per cent in English second language.
  • Hloniphane Mabasa (18) with 87 per cent in Xitsonga home language, 86 per cent in life sciences, 82 per cent in geography, 79 per cent in English second language,74 per cent in life orientation, 69 per cent in physical science, and 55 per cent in mathematics.

Realogile’s Mohale was joined in the high-achieving category by Munyai Dembe (19) with 87 per cent in geography, 85 per cent in physical science, 84 per cent in life sciences, 84 per cent in Venda home language, 79 per cent in mathematics and 71 per cent in life orientation.

Mswanganye and Mohale’s achievements were commended by the Joburg East District director of education, Mnyamezeli Ndevu who said it ought to be celebrated. He also credited the success to the schools’ management teams and teachers. “We should not only celebrate the improvement in numbers and quantities but the persons who signify the potential there is in everyone if they commit to their studies.”

Klass Macheke, also of the department, said the two were the best examples of excellence which wasn’t the preserve of well-resourced, affluent schools. “Commitment and dedication are the only attributes for success, regardless of status,” he said.

“The girls have set the bar for the department to ensure it presses for quality and competency at all schools to produce more distinctions and bachelor’s qualifications.”
