Message from Alex police

Alex Police Station has wished the township’s residents a wonderful festive season and a prosperous new year, however, the community is urged to remain vigilant and safe during the holidays.

The station’s senior management members would like to inform the community that police officers will be in full force at shopping malls, taxi ranks, roadblocks and will show high visibility on the streets to deal with anticipated social, contact and possible violent crimes.

Visible police commander at Alex Police Station, Colonel Johannes Tau said, “Stokvel members must deposit their year’s dividends into the members’ personal accounts.

Tavern operators must comply with bylaws on operating hours. They should not be greedy for money as they risk losing their licences. Also, they should ensure their outlets are safe places and must not sell alcohol to [intoxicated] patrons, but assist them to get home safely and call the police when they see patrons with guns, knives and other dangerous weapons.”

Tau requested residents to behave, to be considerate of others’ rights to also enjoy the moment in peace and to contribute to improving safety and security in the area by reporting all crimes.

He said the year had been challenging, particularly with crimes of murder, rape and motor vehicle hijacking, however, the community members who reported crimes contributed to the significant reduction in these categories.

“The increased visibility of the police will be a continuing exercise to ensure a further reduction in crime in the coming year.”

Tau urged residents to also ensure the safety of their property at all times and, if travelling, to entrust their homes to reliable people. He further urged parents to safeguard their children at all times.

“Those enjoying themselves [must] not carry and disclose lots of money in their possession, and must enjoy themselves in safe places.”
