Washline picket outside Alex court to oppose bail for rape suspect

ALEXANDRA - Community members stand-up against rape.

Adapt and other community organisations in Alexandra will picket outside the Alexandra Magistrate Court in Wynberg on 29 November to oppose the granting of bail to a rape suspect.

Speaking at a planning meeting for the picket, Adapt’s criminal justice coordinator, Catherine Mochaki said they would mobilise the community of Alexandra through their organisations to support the picket to impel the court not to grant bail to the suspect.

A 35-year-old unnamed security guard will appear in court on 29 November on charges of the rape and subsequent death of a two-and-a-half-year-old child. She died from the injuries sustained during the ordeal. The rape occurred during the day on 26 September at a Sandton housing complex where the suspect worked and the victim lived with her mother and 14-year-old sister.

The rape is said to have occurred in the presence of the victim’s sister while their mother was away at work. It is alleged the suspect told the sister to keep quiet about the incident or else he would kill her. It is claimed the suspect also ordered the sister to put a nappy on the child and tell her mother the victim had sustained the injuries from a fall.

Mochaki urged members of the community to come in their numbers to support the family and the memory of the victim. “The weight of our demand can only be seen in numbers. The greater the numbers we can muster the better for our demand,” she said.

She said they will put up a washline on the day with T-shirts that are inscribed with various messages of support for the family, and calling on the magistrate not to grant bail to the accused.
