Police investigate taxi hijacking

JOBURG – Police investigate night hijacking of Avanza taxi.

Alex police are investigating the hijacking of a Toyota Avanza taxi from a 37-year-old driver on 12 September by two armed suspects who are at large.

The incident happened after Alex Police Station acting commander, Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi’s recent warning to taxi owners to stop operating late at night after a spate of reported taxi hijackings.

The vehicle, valued at R50 000 and which hasn’t been recovered, was allegedly hijacked at about 10.30pm by suspects who had posed as passengers.

Alex police spokesperson Captain Allie Kodisang said the victim, who was transporting passengers from Pan Africa Mall, was stopped by the suspects on 16th Avenue. They claimed to be going to Ext 7.

After the victim had dropped off the other passengers, one of the suspects allegedly grabbed him from behind by his throat and the other pointed a gun at him.

They tied him up with shoelaces before one of the men drove the vehicle while the other ordered him to lie face down.

At the Buccleuch interchange onto the M1, they pushed him out of the vehicle and drove off in the direction of Pretoria. The victim walked back along the freeway and met two security guards along the way who untied his hands.
