Defending champions make semis

ALEXANDRA – Defending champions in the boys division MC Weiler, Skeen and Zenzeleni primary schools have all qualified for the semis with one game each in hand.

Defending champions of the boys’ division of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League, MC Weiler, has made it to the semifinals with a game in hand after beating two-time champs Iphutheng 2–0.

MC Weiler has garnered 10 points in Group 1 from four games, and the fifth and last game of the group stages will merely be a formality to decide who takes the top spot on the log table.

As things stand now, MC Weiler could either finish on top after its last game on 12 October or take position two, depending as well on the outcome of the Iphutheng versus Dr Knak game. Both teams are tied on nine points apiece.

A win for whoever in this game will see them top the log with 12 points, while a draw could open the way for Iphutheng to qualify on goal difference as they have a superior goal difference to that of Dr Knak.

The Iphutheng versus Dr Knak game will the one to die for. Both schools will need to pull up their socks and up their game if one of them wants to make it to the semis.

In Group 2, Skeen Primary School has also qualified for the semis, with 10 points from four games, still with a game in hand. Their nearest rivals, Zenzeleni has also made the semis with eight points from the same number of games.

Both teams will face weaker sides in the final group stage games, with Skeen facing Emfundisweni, while Zenzeleni takes on Ekukhanyisweni. The outcomes may not be easy to predict as those teams may be out to spoil their opponents’ parties.

Zenzeleni’s nearest rivals, Bovet and Ekukhanyisweni have four points apiece and wins for them will only take them to seven points in the final games of the group stages.

In the girls’ division, MC Weiler and Iphutheng in Group 1 are tied on 10 points apiece, while their nearest rival, Dr Knak has nine points from the same number of games as the boys.

A loss for the top two and a win for the third-placed team, which is Dr Knak, could see them take over the summit of the log with the 12 points Dr Knak need nothing but a win to have hopes of qualifying for the semis, provided that its top two rivals are walloped in the last game.

In Group 2, DH Carter and Ekukhanyisweni have qualified for the semis in the girls’ division, regardless of outcomes for them or their opponents. Their games will merely be a formality.

This is because their nearest rivals, Bovet and Emfundisweni, both have four points, and wins from them will only take them to seven points and no further, two less from the second placed side.
