Neighbours help nab robbery and attempted rape suspect

ALEXANDRA – Neighbours help apprehend couple's robbery and attempted rape suspect.

A suspected robber was recently remanded in custody pending a court appearance.

Further investigations are currently underway.

The suspect of 11th Avenue was arrested by Alex police in the early morning on 10 September at a couple’s 8th Avenue residence.

Spokesperson for Alexandra Police Station, Captain Allie Kodisang said the accused and two accomplices allegedly broke into the couple’s room and found the female victim on a chair and talking on her cellphone while her boyfriend was sleeping.

One of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at the girlfriend and demanded money. She directed them to her drawer and as they searched it, the victim tried to wake up her boyfriend but he was fast asleep. The suspects took R500, a plasma TV and two cellphones.

As they left the room, the boyfriend woke up. The suspects allegedly threatened him with the firearm and ordered him not to look at them. They then broke the lights in the room. When the suspects were outside, the victims overheard one of the suspects tell the others to go and he would join them later.

The suspect entered the victim’s room again and at gunpoint, allegedly ordered the female victim to slowly undress which she did. He then pushed her closer to the bed and ordered her to kneel while he switched on his cellphone light to see her. Just then, the boyfriend tackled him and as they fought, the gun fell out of the suspect’s grip.

The female victim then opened a window and screamed, attracting neighbours who came to their rescue. The neighbours restrained the suspect and called the police. Police then arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect.

The firearm used by the suspects was found to be a toy gun.

The total value of the stolen items was estimated at R6 000, excluding the cost of the broken door.

Police are still on the hunt for the other two suspects.
