Youths’ hijack attempt nets them 15-year sentences

ALEXANDRA – Due to their age, admission of guilt, remorse and because they were first-time offenders, they will only spend five years behind bars.

Two young Alex men who had pleaded guilty and were sentenced by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 15 years each for theft and attempted vehicle hijacking, will instead remain behind bars for five years.

This after 10 years were suspended for five years due to their age, admission of guilt, remorse and because they were first-time offenders.

Nhlanhla Monareng (19) and Valentive Legodi (20) robbed a motorist in a VW Polo who had stopped at a traffic light in Kramerville at about 11.45am on 5 July this year. The two men along with a third, who is still at large and wanted by the police, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his phone which he handed over. While they were still harassing the victim, another vehicle with two security guards arrived and immediately sprang into action when they realised what was happening. The accused ran away but were pursued by the guards in their and the victim’s vehicles. The two were apprehended, while the third, who had the gun and stolen cellphone, escaped.
