60-year-old on attempted murder charge

ALEXANDRA – 60-year-old allegedly attempts murder with knife.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court granted bail to a 60-year-old Alex man charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after allegedly assaulting his 28-year-old neighbour.

A further charge of attempted murder may be added.

The accused, who lives on the same property as the victim on 11th Avenue, admitted to only assaulting his neighbour. He will be back in court on 7 September for a further hearing.

He was said to have approached the victim, who was with his girlfriend at the property, at about 9am on 3 August this year and attempted to stab him with an Okapi knife but the victim and girlfriend fled into his room closing the door behind them.

The accused left but returned with five men who were armed with baseball bats and golf clubs with which they allegedly assaulted the victim, inflicting severe injuries after hauling him out of his room. The victim had to be treated at the Alexandra Clinic.

The victim claimed the assault was engineered by an uncle with whom he has a longstanding disagreement over a shack on the property.

The case continues.
