Cosmos Zwane schools games take root

ALEX – Joburg north high schools set to battle it out in an exciting knockout tournament.

The third edition of the Sibusiso ‘Cosmos’ Zwane Tournament of the Johannesburg East District Schools Football Cup was launched at the No 3 Square Grounds in Alexandra.

A total of 16 schools from Joburg north will lock horns for the trophy and these include last year’s champions Alexandra High School.

Schools taking part in the tournament will include Alex High, Barnato Park High, Eastbank High, Eastridge High, Highlands North Boys High, KwaBhekilang High, Leap School, Liberty Community High, Northview High, Pholosho Junior Secondary, Realogile High, Sagewood High, Sandringham High, Sandtonview High and Wendywood High.

The games will be played every Friday, starting on 5 August, with the final of the tournament scheduled for 23 September at No 3 Square Grounds where all the games will be played.

The tournament also includes netball games which will be played simultaneously with the football matches. The tournament will be a knockout tournament with no second legs as it had in the past.

Zwane said funding was his biggest challenge in getting the tournament going and he ended up using some of his funds he had saved up for his children.

“My business was not going well, I had to dig deep and take from my kids’ money, as it is I am owing the kids’ school fees, so that I can run this tournament,” said the former Jomo Cosmos player.

Zwane also welcomed anyone who was willing to assist with anything to come forward and thanked all the participating schools for their support and commitment to the tournament.

“I would like to see this tournament grow and become big and employ people to run this tournament and in a way, I will be creating jobs.

“I would love to be paying these referees more money for the job that they are doing. I am far away from the dream. I would love to see the

Three Square packed with all the sporting codes,” said Zwane.

Finalists in both the netball and soccer tournaments will be awarded medals and sports kits, with the champions in both sporting codes being awarded

floating trophies.
