Blessing for Buti walk

ALEXANDRA - Mary Buti, wife of iconic Rev Dr Sam Buti, blesses the launch of the fun walk taking place on 10 September.

The wife of the late Alexandra icon, the Rev Dr Sam Buti, has blessed the launch of a 7km walk which will be held on 10 September in his memory.

Mary Buti, a former school teacher, gave her blessing for the event at the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa Alexandra branch where her husband used to minister.

Dr Buti fought against the apartheid regime when it wanted to destroy Alexandra and formed the Save Alexandra Campaign, and later became an apartheid mayor of the township.

The walk is a fundraising initiative that is the brainchild of Sunday school teacher, Lerato Tlhakwana and will start at the church and culminate at the Altrec Sports Complex where there will be fun and games for the whole family.

The church hopes to raise about R100 000 towards the completion of renovations currently underway at the church.

“I am delighted that you have come up with this brilliant idea which will surely go a long way towards keeping the memory of my husband alive in this township he so loved and worked tirelessly for, for many years of his life,” Mary said.

She pointed out that Buti’s family was quite big and most of them were committed to other issues but they gave their blessings and expressed their delight at the news of the launch of his remembrance walk.

“I am certain that wherever he is, he is delighted to see that his work and times in the community of Alexandra are being treasured and celebrated. I have nothing more but just to wish the organisers of the fun walk all the best on the day,” Mary said.
