Sivusa Isizwe rebuilds a shattered nation

ALEXANDRA – Tsutsumani feeding scheme appeals for help to feed granny-headed households.

Sivusa Isizwe, which means to rebuild the nation, is a feeding scheme and it needs assistance from the community in continuing the charity work of resuscitating what it calls a shattered nation.

Started in 2014, Sivusa Isizwe’s work touches the lives of 16 granny-headed households whose grandchildren or husbands are in need.

Lindiwe Dube, the driver of the Tsutsumani-based project in Namibia Drive said, because of limited resources, the feeding scheme has had to close its doors to more grannies and their grandchildren, who desperately need assistance.

“We can only do so much and beyond that it becomes difficult for us as we get limited assistance and, in many instances, we have to supplement what we get from our own pockets,” she said.

“If we can get more partners come in to assist us, I am sure we can grow the number of beneficiaries to cover most of the people who go

hungry in our community, because they cannot either find work or are pensioners whose grant isn’t enough to cover the needs of their over-sized family of grandchildren.”

Sivusa Isizwe currently receives a supply of R250 a month worth of groceries which includes rice, mealie-meal, canned food and other items, while Fruit Spot in Kelvin supports them with a weekly supply of fresh vegetables.

Dube said once a month, when they have to hand out food parcels, they cook a meal from their homes for the grannies, grandads and grandchildren before handing out the food hampers.

“We’re receiving an overwhelming request for assistance and it would be nice to get more sponsors on board so we can cater for more granny-headed families,” Dube said.
