Lockable stalls for PanAfrica Mall traders

ALEXANDRA - First phase construction of lockable stalls for informal PanAfrica Mall traders will start soon

The precinct around the PanAfrica Mall will soon change aesthetically and functionally following an announcement of the commencement of the construction of linear market stalls for traders currently operating on the site.

This was said at a meeting of representatives of the Joburg Development Agency (JDA) and the provincial Department of Economic Development with the traders at the SanKopano Community Centre.

Lerato Kola of the JDA said the project was due to start this month. The appointed contractor and consultants of urban architects, community participation consultants and civil engineers were introduced to the traders and community members. “Construction of the first 59 stalls, which will be tailor-made to suit the different traders, should be completed by the end of June and more will follow depending on available budget allocation,” Kola said.

He added that traders would be able to lock up their goods in the stalls overnight and there would be seating areas where customers of the food vendors could sit and eat.

Kola also indicated that the project’s consultation process involved mall tenants, adjacent shop owners and relevant committees in Region E.
