Alex schools register for McDonald’s league

ALEXANDRA – High schools in Alexandra will take part in the McDonald's U14 Schools League which will kick-off at district level on a date still to be announced.

Following Alexandra’s successful hosting of the McDonald’s U14 Schools League final last year, the township’s five high schools have all registered for this year’s tournament again.

The Alex schools, which include Alexandra High School, Eastbank High School, KwaBhekilanga Secondary School, Pholosho Combined School and Liberty Community College, will form the Johannesburg East District (formerly District 9), along with their counterparts in the central area.

The schools from the central area include Northview High School in Highlands North, Kensington Secondary School in Kensington, Athlone Boys’ High School in Bezuidenhout Valley, Sandringham High School in Sandringham and Wendywood High School in Sandton.

All 10 schools will slug it out, on dates still to be announced, to determine the district winner, which will then move into a regional competition, which is a precursor to the provincial festivals.

The new format of the competition has paired up two provinces to join forces in hosting their respective finals in one of the provinces. However, they will be playing two different tournaments.

The Gauteng province, in which the Johannesburg East District falls, has been paired with the North West and will hold their festivals in the North West at a venue still to be announced on 20 August.

The first festival will feature KwaZulu-Natal as the host and will be joined by the Free State on 10 July; while the second one will feature Mpumalanga as hosts together with Limpopo on 13 August.

After the Gauteng/North West provincial festival, follows the three Cape provinces, with the Western Cape hosting on 10 September, they will be joined by the Eastern Cape and Northern Cape.

The nine provincial winners will then proceed to the McDonald’s U14 Schools League national finals to be held in Gauteng from 29 September to 1 October.
