St Mary’s girls visit Alex

WAVERLEY – St Mary’s School continues to develop its good relationship with the community of Alexandra, not only through community outreach and education projects with the local schools but also by visiting Alexandra itself.

The girls took part in the annual Form I outing to Alexandra township.

The outing was organised in two parts. Girls spent half the day touring the township, exploring aspects of its history and the daily life of a typical Alex resident. Housing, infrastructure, transport and urban renewal projects across the township were explored.

The second part of the outing involved an investigation into the economy of the township during which the girls conducted surveys with local business owners. Taxi drivers, restaurant managers and informal fruit sellers along the pavements were interviewed.

During the outing, four St Mary’s girls were selected to be involved in a live discussion on community radio station, AlexFM. The girls, Ronewa Mangale, Gabriella Lamparelli, Kelsey Mocke and Kate Parker spoke confidently about their visit to Alex and about the warm welcome they received from community members.
