Hidden treasure in Alex

ALEXANDRA – Children and the elderly come Monday to Fridays to experience the magic at the Alexandra Aftercare and Feeding Scheme run by the Union of Jewish Women.

Monday to Friday, children and the elderly experience the magic at the Alexandra Aftercare and Feeding Scheme run by the Union of Jewish Women in Houghton.

This project has been running since 2012 and has provided children with a safe haven to play and have supervised homework and lunch.

According to Lydia Makhoba, one of the caregivers at the aftercare which is run from the premises of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the children are treated to days out and a fabulous Christmas party in December.

“If you work a full day and worry about your children after school, you know you can send your them to our wonderful centre, at no cost to you,” Makhoba said.

Established in 2007, the Feeding Scheme provides hot, cooked meals to an average of 296 adults and 250 children per month.

Makhoba urged those who want a plate of hot, cooked food which is freshly prepared, that lunch is served at 12pm Monday to Friday. “We always welcome new faces and really provide your loved ones with love and care,” she added.

The centre is funded by Bidvest Bank and is run with the help of volunteers, and is always in need of assistance, and those willing to help are more than welcome.

The centre currently needs the services of a person who can teach dance to the children.
