October is Elderly Awareness Month and the Joburg City Council intends to use the occasion to raise awareness on dementia, a condition associated with the elderly.

Although dementia is said to affect mostly those over 65 years old and manifests as Alzheimers, which can be noticed by forgetfulness and the shaking limbs, it has also started to affect younger people.

The council’s social development department will partner with Dementia SA in an awareness campaign to educate the general public on the signs, symptoms and treatment of the disease; to create knowledge of how to handle and support those already in the later stages of the disease; and to prevent the elderly from abuse as a result of ignorance about the disease.

The campaign will be implemented in all regions of the country and Alex will host the campaign on 19 October at the Sankopano Community Centre. The community is invited to attend the campaign to further their knowledge on dementia.
