Clinic construction benefits local contractors

ALEXANDRA - A local councillor has expressed satisfaction with the community beneficiation arrangement in the development of the Riverpark Clinic.

Councillor Mokgadi Radebe took a tour of the almost complete Riverpark Clinic in Alex.

The clinic, which will ease the pressure from five other clinics in the heavily congested township, was started in April and construction is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Radebe said the clinic would change the lives of many residents, especially the elderly who have transport challenges in getting to the other clinics. “We expect when it’s completed to render quality services and to engage local staff with a better understanding of local conditions, needs and problems,” she said.

Radebe added that local contractors were being used as part of the project. “Sixteen sub-contractors were engaged for work ranging from earthworks, brickwork, roofing, glazing, painting, flooring, electrification, ceiling, landscaping and also security.”

This she said empowered the local community through employment and, while mostly men benefited during the construction phase, they anticipated that women would be engaged in the non-intensive work such as landscaping.
