Alex Clinic handed over to department of health

ALEXANDRA - The Alex Clinic also known as Masakhane was officially handed over to the provincial government's department of health as planned at the beginning of July.

The Alex Clinic, also known as Masakhane was officially handed over to the provincial government’s department of health as planned at the beginning of July.

CEO of the clinic, Labane Maluleke said the change of ownership came about because the clinic’s board wanted the clinic to be able to access support essential for the provision of all standard services in the health sector. As an NPO, the clinic was dependent on donor funding and couldn’t afford all these services.

“This change was communicated publicly at stakeholder meetings, and government agreed and announced when they would take over,” said Maluleke. “When the last bits of the transfer are concluded this month [August], the board will inform stakeholders publicly, and assist them on how to engage with government as the new clinic authority.”

Maluleke, who may be stepping down, commended the board for affording him the opportunity and support to leave the clinic operating successfully. He cited some of the successes as implementing administration and management plans, a stable funding base through partnerships with major co-operates which continue to fund infrastructure development and improvement of services at the clinic, and partnerships with the media which provided management a platform to engage with the clinic’s beneficiaries.

After six years of dedicated service to the clinic, Maluleke will announce his future plans in due course.
