WATCH: Classic performance by Sun City

Sun City Classic were crowned as the 2015 Maimane Alfred Phiri (MAP) Games champions after defeating JT Black Stars in the final.

Sun City Classic were crowned champions of the 2015 Maimane Alfred Phiri (Map) Games after defeating JT Black Stars 3-1 in the final.

The team from Mpumalanga, coached by former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jabulani Mendu, played exciting football throughout the tournament as they mesmerised fans with displays of their balls skills.

Classic started the game as the better of the two teams, holding much of the ball possession in the opening stages of the game. In the 19th minute, Lucky Mothwa was the first to open the scoring for Classic after a great build-up from midfield.

Mendu’s boys continued to press forward and were rewarded with a penalty after Mustafa Ponyera was fouled in the box.

The referee took no prisoners, and in the 25th minute he gave Classic’s Vukile Mgqibisi his marching orders with a straight red card after a dangerous tackle. The decision left fans on their feet as they felt it was too harsh.

Stars captain Cyril Muzambwe led his team’s charge, as he did throughout the tournament, when he curled the ball with his sweet left foot into the top corner of the net, leaving Classic goalkeeper Craig Mabena with no chance. At halftime Classic led 2-1.

In the second half, Stars looked more organised, but had nothing to show for their possession. The game was more physical in the second stanza as both teams had their eyes set on the big prize money at stake.

Ponyera was again fouled a few metres outside the box and the resultant free kick set the stadium alight when the ball flew past goalkeeper Zwelethu Maqhina as Classic put the game to bed.

Stars threw everything at the game as they sought to get back, but to no avail as the classy defence of Classic stood tall. The KwaMhlanga side held their nerve and took home a whopping R130 000.
