Alexandra Police Station to host healing prayers after shootings

ALEXANDRA - Alexandra police will convene interdenominational prayers at the station to heal the trauma engulfing the station after the recent murder of an officer and four civilians who had come to report a case of domestic abuse.

Alexandra police will hold an interdenominational prayer session at the Alex Police Station in a bid to heal the trauma which is engulfing the station after the recent murder of an officer and three civilians who had come to report a case of domestic abuse.

The prayers will be at 10am on 2 July. This after an appeal by National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega at the murdered officer’s funeral service, encouraging police to also pray for their own safety from the dangers they encounter while on duty.

The acting visible policing commander Lieutenant Benny Moodley said the killings have affected those who work at the station. Morale needs to be uplifted through spiritual healing, counselling and other essential support, he said.

“We need to normalise the conditions and situation, re-establish a peaceful environment at the station and improve morale among officers who were left speechless. They need assistance to enable them to resume their duty to protect and serve the community with vigour,” said Moodley.

He said that the occasion would be a starting point for the religious fraternity to help lead police officers and the community in prayer at different venues, as they too had been affected by the incident.

“The Alex public also needs self-healing, for courage to dissuade them from associating with crime and for courage and confidence to report crime,” Moodley concluded.
