Africa Day comes to Joburg Theatre

JOBURG - South Africa will celebrate Africa Day by bringing international artists from around the continent to the Joburg Theatre in Braamfontein for a two-day musical event like no other.

Africa Day is celebrated on 25 May, with the Joburg Theatre presenting South Africans with the opportunity to witness a show filled with local acts joined by international acts.

Roshnie Moonsamy, the event manager at Joburg Theatre, explained that the concert should show the interconnectedness of all Africans.

“Africa Day reminds us how we are all connected in music and in culture, and Africa has such rich music-producing areas with so many beloved acts coming straight out of the continent,” said Moonsamy.

“There are small areas that we have, including Cape Verde, that have a unique style of music that is characteristic to them only – much like the reggae music that came from Jamaica.”

The artists who will perform over the two days include Lura from Cape Verde, Lira and Ringo Madlingozi from South Africa, and special guest Abena Koomson from Nigeria.

The Fela Tribute (in honour of the Nigerian Afrobeat Master, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, whose life has been taken to the Broadway stage in New York) will feature multi-talented Nigerian saxophonist, Femi Koya, with his 8-piece South African band and special guest Koomson.

A number of acts from all over the continent will be in attendance at the Africa Day music concert. In true celebration of the arts, Koomsoon will take Africa Day to schools by hosting a number of workshops.

The Africa Day celebrations promise to be a diverse and exciting programme which salutes Africa’s musical heritage, from the inimitable sounds from Cape Verde, to South Africa’s musical offerings and even a tribute to a Nigerian Afrobeat Master.

Africa Day celebrations at Joburg Theatre will take place on 22 and 23 May.
