Cops urge lovebirds to stay away from the Jukskei Park at night

ALEXANDRA - Police in Alexandra have warned of marauding thugs that roam Jukskei Park in Eastbank during the night and often prey on lovebirds who frequent the spot.

This has led to cops issuing a ‘stay away from Jukskei Park’ warning to residents, a number of whom have fallen victim to the marauding gang of either two or three suspects who rape and rob their victims.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the armed gang sometimes finds pairs of lovebirds or couples in the park and order them to have sexual intercourse.

After the act, the lovebirds are then robbed of their wallets, cellphones and other valuables before being let go. “They sometimes go to the extent of undressing couples with either expensive clothing or shoes,” warned Maphakela.

The suspects, believed to be between the ages of 25 and 35, frequent the park between the hours of 8pm and 2am and Maphakela said most of the cases are robberies, although sometimes they also rape their victims.

“We therefore appeal to the public to stay away from Jukskei Park and to also assist the police by reporting any suspicious activity or persons in the park,” Maphakela said. He said the last reported incident in the park was in November last year and the lull in activity up until now could be attributed to a frequent police patrol in the area.
