As per tradition, education minister Angie Motshekga will announce the national and provincial breakdown of the results on 6 January.
Elijah Mhlanga, spokesperson of the department said on the day the results would be released at the schools and any other venues where the exams were written. Results would also be released in newspapers, but only with pupils’ identity and examination numbers.
The public and education department will be anxious to see if this year’s results will surpass last year’s, when the national average pass rate was 78.2 percent. Gauteng province came in third on 87 percent, North West was second with 87.2 percent and top was Free State with 87.4 percent.
In Alex, the results were also an improvement from previous years with Kwabhekilanga Secondary School topping the list with a 97 percent pass rate with Alex High at 87.7 percent, Eastbank (86.8), Minerva (83.65) and Realogile (70).
The improvement in performance for the Alex schools was attributed to private sector support through the upgrade of facilities, provision of equipment and the department’s schools improvement programme which included weekend and holiday revisions and tutorials.
Credit was also given to pupils for prioritising education above other social attractions and also educators’ determination in a year when no teachers or pupils’ strikes were reported.
