As part of the national commemoration, South African should ring bells, sound sirens, hoot or use loud hailers to call the country to attention at three minutes and seven seconds before 10am – that is 09:56:53.

This will be followed by observing of a moment of silence at 10am until 10:03am.

The time from the onset of calling the country to attention until the end of the moment of silence will be exactly six minutes and seven seconds, symbolising the 67 years Mandela he devoted to fighting for freedom.

The national anthem will thereafter be sung at 10:03am across the country signifying the end of the moment of silence.
