Motorist shoots dead most wanted hijacker

ALEXANDRA - A notorious and most wanted car hijacker has been shot dead by a motorist who witnessed him allegedly hijacking a fellow motorist.

Alexandra’s notorious and most wanted car hijacker has been shot dead by a motorist who witnessed him allegedly hijacking a fellow motorist.

The suspect was shot at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Road and 8th Avenue after he allegedly hijacked a motorist who had stopped at the red traffic lights a little after 7:30am. He managed to flee the scene and Alex police who were patrolling the area were alerted and gave chase.

The suspect ran down from 8th Avenue along Vincent Tshabalala Road and then collapsed on a small street in 9th Avenue, leading up to a nearby thicket of shacks. Police recovered a fully loaded special revolver.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said two suspects, one armed with a firearm, had approached a Polo Vivo driver when he stopped at traffic light during peak hour morning traffic on 14 November.

They then ordered the driver out of his car. The unarmed men then jumped into the driver’s seat while his colleague tried to jump into the passenger side. A fellow motorist from behind who had witnessed the hijacking is said to have shouted “stop it guys, stop it”, as he came out of his car.

Maphakela said the armed suspect then turned to aim his firearm at the shouting motorist, but the motorist is said to have pulled his trigger first, hitting the suspect’s upper body from behind. The armed suspect fled the scene on foot, but collapsed a few metres from the scene.

Paramedics were called to the scene and certified the suspect dead on arrival. Maphakela said the shot suspect had been a notorious car hijacker on the same spot he was shot at and was the most wanted suspect for car hijackings, armed robbery and rape in Alexandra.

The other suspect, who is being hunted by the police, abandoned the hijacked car at the corner of 8th Avenue and Florence Mphosho Street closer to Marlboro. “We are still looking for the other suspect and appeal to the community to come forward with any information that could lead to apprehension of the suspect.”

When asked what happens to the civilian motorist who shot the other suspect dead, Maphakela said he was not arrested but a statement was taken from the suspect and it will be stashed in a car hijacking case that has been opened. “It is up to the court to decide whether to charge or not to charge the motorist shooter,” he said.

  1. What alternative did the observer have but to defend himself when attacked? The alternative was to be shot.
South Africans need to stand together against crime until we eradicate it.
Crime affects all of us very badly.
Well done to the guy with the courage to try to help those hijacked!

  2. Well done to that motorist! He used the correct method to attempt to stop the crime in progress, and legally fired a shot in order to protect himself and others from an unlawful attack. He will not be charged, but a docket will be opened in order for the death to be investigated. I would recommend that the motorist who shot this hi-jacker be nominated for a bravery award.

  3. The motorist has saved lives by shooting him. In my opinion he is a hero.
Also…why would they waste a moon blanket on coverinh that pig? They r darn expensive! !!

  4. Well done motorist – one doesn’t expect to hear of someone intervening in an armed hijacking. I’d like to buy you a few beers at least.

Great shooting to cancel this piece of trash with one shot. As mentioned by others, this was a completely legitimate use of lethal force and I am glad to see the outcome.

  5. So sad that this beautiful country has come to this, but at least that’s one that has been “deterred”!

  6. It is about time we all stand together and help our fellow citizens… this man is a hero… it would be very disappointing to hear if charges are ever brought against him!!!… well done sir – WE SALUTE YOU!!

  7. Your photo is labeled “An alleged hijacker…” but your article begins with “Alexandra’s notorious and most wanted car hijacker…”. So which is he? Unless he is a hijacker, your entire article has no factual base whatsoever, so either stop calling him an ‘alleged hijacker’ or don’t write the story.

  8. I think its fantastic work. Well done to the chap that pulled the trigger.

We need to stand together and help one another when it comes to fighting crime.People who turn a blind eye are disgusting, Think to yourself what if that was your mother brother sister or wife in that car? why would it be any different being someone else you don’t know.

  9. We need to be kept up to date on this & all protest if this protector is not recognised as just that! Well done for his quick action & accuracy in stopping the hijacking. This is what we need to fight the crime, it’s the only way seeing as they’re either not caught or not kept away from society.

  10. The only thing the court should concern themselves with in the case of the “motorist shooter” is not whether to send him to prison, but how large the medal should be that we give him.

  11. Why should we think something MUST happen to the shooter (or should we also say the alleged shooter)? Unless I am missing something here the shooting was done in private defence and is therefor justified… Why the questions about arresting a person in these circumstances or what will happen to him?

  12. Do we really want every person with a gun to be a vigilante? What if the story read, “man tries to shoot hijacker and kills child in car passing by”. Yes it is brilliant that this cancer is dead but it points to a sad future with a lot more do gooders making a mess of things.

  13. The loss of life is always regrettable but as the old saying goes “You live by the sword, you die by the sword. I guess in this case its a gun. A relative of mine once got arrested because the Alex SAPS thought he was this guy (they have the same name and “look alike” according to them). Thankfully it was cleared up but anyway my condolences goes out to his family. Even though he was a menace to society there are people who still “cared” for him.Hope the motorist who shot him doesnt et charged (P.S This is my opinion, I speak for myself and in no way do i condone crime in any form.)

  14. What a shocking commentary on society! Equally interesting to see that all those claiming self defense seem to have missed the “hitting the suspect’s upper body from behind” part. Bit tricky to achieve that when somebody has a gun pointed at you and is trying to shoot at you.

  15. This is the only way to deal with criminals. Crime has gone out of hand… being vigilant is the only way to curb it.

  16. THE MONDAY BEFOR SAME PLACE SAME TIME A ATTEMPTED HIJACKING OF A BLUE FORD FIESTA.BUT THE CHOP BROKE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND COULD NOT START THE CAR.
I WAS A WITNESS RIGHT BEHIND HIM. IF I HAD A GUN I WOULD HAVE ALSO SHOT THEM.

  17. Yes,Sean,in a perfect society, where dignity, respect and selfrespect is found in all, this would be wrong. In our society, it is not black against white, but good people against bad people, that will make this country work. This is a good man, who had to make a stand against a bad man. It is going to keep him awake at night, believe me, and he will need the support of other good people and loved ones. Now he is a hero, but tonight, in his bed, he is alone. Strongs to you sir, with my utmost respect. You did not stand idly by, you acted. That makes you a man. And Sean, a guy turning around with a loaded gun pointed at you,you shoot him then, not when he is eventually fully turned around and aiming carefully at you.

  18. Excellent, I’m so glad that the motorist played his part since he was armed and saw it going down, most would just sit in their car and mind their own business, well done SIR, we need more people like this and then criminals will think twice before trying to hi-jack somebody’s car. It seems neither the government, police or justice system can stem the tide of crime, so now the public will have to step in and I do condone this type of action, It was thought through and took the correct action. WELL DONE AGAIN.

  19. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Motorist who shot the hijacker should not be charged. Hijacker, had a firearm too. Justice has been served.

  20. To Sean. If you think the shot in back was wrong. Do you think the hijack is fine. And the way the Hijacker takes on innocent people.

Did you think of the scenario where he was facing the guy who shot him. And when he saw the guy draw his gun he turned as he was startled what was happening. As the shot went off. Or would you in that scenario have waited for him to turn back and shoot the person. He also could have standed slightly side ways. Where the bullet also could have hit on his back.

Any case this is justified. Since the Hijacker was a known criminal putting peoples lives at risk with an illegal gun. Prpably has killed prior to this as well.

  21. Sean. If you read the article you will see the suspect tried to get into the passenger side of the car. If he was right handed and someone behind him call out to him, he would have extended his right arm with the gun towards the good guy and his right side and back facing towards the good guy. Try it yourself and then give comments that make sense

  22. At last!! Justice has been served.. Whether the guy was shot from behind or not. Fact is they did hijack the car. They were about to drive off. So in all honestly, nobody else would have done it. This man has been brave to stand alone amongst many. And he deserves a gold medal for this. Thank you SIR!!! Keep up the good work

  23. That man should be given an medallion, if fire arm regulations didn’t turn as al into victims more people would save lives and stop crime this way.

  24. Not many stop to help anymore. He deserves praise for taking a stand on what he obviously felt was the right reaction at the time, not criticism. You don’t know his circumstances or thinking unless you have walked in his shoes. Well done SIR! If I was ever in such a situation I would wish that the very brave civilian was nearby.

  25. Well done ! I hope the goverment will use their brains , and protect and praise this mam rather than him getting charged

  26. Mark is 100% correct!

Sean, don’t make comments where you have no idea what you are talking about!! You make yourself look like an idiot.. Rather keep quiet and avoid being called Bollie!!

  27. Only one shot, he should of emptied the magazine into the suspect. But well done to you sir. You are 1 in a million.

  28. The time has come to turn the statistics on these low life scum! Well done! Its never a good thing to take a life if you are a honest person but the crime in our country has already gone too far and if it means that vigilanties have to start protectecting the people, then I say GO FOR IT! The laws are already a joke as it only applies to suite when ever needed.

  29. Well done to the fellow motorist & good luck with your own healing process.
What I DO NOT understand is that the police says he was a repeat offender at that same spot … why did they then not catch him on that same spot when he tried to do it again!?!?!
More pro active policing can prevent a lot of crimes, surely!

  30. The shooter is a hero … think he should be publicly honoured (presidential awards for courage and initiative are in order)

  31. What part does Sean not understand after reading the story. The man is wanted for several car hijackings and rape. Give that hero a bells.

  32. Thank God for people able to take action like that please award that motorist with a purple heart, I pray that God will help more people arm themselves and wipe out this scourge of society, please thank that motorist on behalf of myself the lady that got mugged in traffic two cars from me this last Friday and every other innocent person who’s life has been damaged by these sum bags.

  33. Well done for the shooter. If only there were more of them protecting others on the road!!

  34. Sean I wonder what you will do when they hijack you….
Your comment makes me wonder on which side are you.. Justice or injustice? Crime or no crime? Rather keep your mouth shut if you love crime…

  35. The whole body was supposed to be covered with bricks only, as he doesn’t even deserve that plastic.

  36. Live by the Sword Die by the Sword.

Well done SA, time for the community to stand up and take back the land. Remove all these criminals who deserve nothing!!!

  37. Hooraay for dead crooks, but no-no for vigilante gunslingers, if you wanted to be a cop you should have gone for training.

Our FAA is so strict he will probably sit for this even though he thought he did the right thing.

No ones life was in danger when he decided to be judge/jury/executor especially not his own or someone he loves.
The fact that the hijacker pointed his gun at Robin Hood would have been avoided if he sat in his car and watched the Vivo drive off.

Sad day for Criminal Human Rights

  38. So…. I guess the HERO of Alex is facing LIFE in prison because the Hijacker HAD rights. Victims in this country have no rights anymore and hey maybe we can rely on our Justice System or even the SAPS…. NOT

  39. SAGunOwner, you really think our cops went for proper training and passed it. I HAVE BEEN one for 10 years… I can tell you stories. How many hours do you wait for the police to arrive at a reported crime (in progress that is). It is up to us to defend ourselves. AND if your or somebody else’s LIFE is in direct danger, you can act. The LAW states that. So you can call the police whenever (God forbid) you are facing a life threatening situation.. Best of luck.

  40. Sean… if that was your car that was being taken and your life threatened would you still be wining when someone helped? Imbecile.

  41. @SAGunOwner

WAIT!! You’re saying one should witness a crime being completed and then make peace with it?? Look what we have become under the tyrants and crime lords. The shooter didn’t approach to kill. He approached to STOP A CRIME… to stop two people who HAD NO RIGHT TO DO WHAT THEY WERE DOING…. of which one TURNED A GUN ON HIM. Each intention isolated and that’s how a proper court of law will see it as well.

  42. It is called legal vigilantism. That’s what happens when the SAPS and justice system fail our citizens. I wonder how many innocent motorists this wanted thug has shot before? You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

  43. @SAGunOwner: ‘Criminal Human Rights’??? They don’t have a right – when they steal and rape and break the law they give up that right! Sad that the rights to own a car and drive it around without being taken from you at the robots are less important to you than the ‘rights’ of some thug who thinks they can do whatever they want and get away with it (and sad that most of the time, they can get away with it cos of our backlogged legal system).

  44. Wait for all the ANC people telling us it was because of apartheid and the Nats that he turned to crime

  45. Good riddance… Oh I can just kiss the guy who did this marvelous thing of shooting the hooligan.

  46. This article is missing a few things. Like the fully loaded special revolver? ya mean a 38?
also it says Maphakela said the armed suspect then turned to aim his firearm at the shouting motorist, but the motorist is said to have pulled his trigger first, hitting the suspect’s upper body from behind.

How does a person turn to aim his/her gun at another person and get shot in the back, must have been a slow turner!

I do not think the good Samaritan should be charged with anything, he was a hero..

  47. The Motorist probably only got let off because he shouted “Stop it guys” and only shot when the subhuman tried to point a gun at him.

These guys deserve to die though. They are the filth and sin in our country that need to be cleansed.

  48. well done to the man, never take any blame for your actions. You did a job that needed to be done and you must be commended for it.
