Alex matrics in cinema revision exercise

JOBURG - Matriculants from schools in Alexandra joined their counterparts country wide in digitised matric revision sessions.

Matriculants from schools in Alexandra joined their counterparts countrywide in digitised matric revision sessions.

The revision sessions are part of the EduCate initiative and consist of revision sessions that are broadcast simultaneously to a network of 14 digitised cinemas across the country. Each of the 10 lessons on screen are supported by a workbook or toolkit.

The sessions commenced on 2 August and will run for 10 consecutive weeks. They are sponsored by Capitec Bank, BHP Billiton, Samsung, National Youth Development Agency, Telkom Mobile, Studietrust, Tsogo Sun, The Events Production Company and Primestars Marketing, and is supported by the departments of basic education and science and technology.

The EduCate programme, which is now in its fourth year, provides students from disadvantaged backgrounds with matric revision tutoring in maths and science at cinemas throughout the country, in the run-up to the matric exams.

Speaking at the launch of the fourth EduCate initiative, Primestars Marketing managing director, Martin Sweet said the revision session for disadvantaged matriculants reinforces their commitment to “invest in the education of the formerly marginalised groups, especially in the much sought after fields of maths and science”.

More than 150 000 pupils countrywide will be touched by this programme which Sweet described as “the most viable way of the redistribution of wealth. The redistribution of resources for opportunities; this is what educate is all about,” he added.

He urged other private sector companies to step up and be counted in this noble initiative.
