The death of an Alex woman last week allegedly at the hands of police is now being investigated by the police watchdog agency.

In a statement, the Democratic Alliance’s Gauteng leader John Modley said they welcomed the independent police investigation directorate’s (IPID) involvement in the alleged act of police brutality.

Passing condolences to the deceased’s (Aphiwe Zweni) family, Modley said that should the directorate’s investigation reveal police involvement in the alleged fatal beating, the officers involved should be swiftly brought to justice.

He added that the incident formed part of a growing trend of similar tragedies involving the police and needed to be taken seriously by both provincial and national governments.”It is not acceptable to have reactive responses to issues of police brutality and more must be done to avoid such(involved police) entering the police services he said” adding that the nature of the job, required the police to receive regular debriefing conducted by qualified professionals.

The incident has also angered the community with some planning to take to submit a petition on the incident to the station during the week.

Details: John Modley; 082 960 3743
