Alex songbird Nkiyase toasts her Sama nomination

Nkiyase says she will take the award to her former school Gresswold to encourage and inspire the children.

Alex songbird Nkiyase Mondlane-Mbatha, better known only as Nkiyase in the music industry, is toasting her first-ever South African Music Awards nomination after 23 years of working the industry.

Nkiyase has since released three albums, Lebota, Mudar and eBom the latest being, I am who I am, and has also collaborated with artists such as Trompies, Oskido, Arthur Mafokate, Spikiri, Joe Nina, Mapaputsi and other legendary musicians.
Nkiyase, also known as Sister Nswembu, started her music career in 2000 as a member of the Petit group which was was first all-female Kwaito group in the country but in 2003 decided to branch solo.

She then released her first solo album, Lebota, under the tutelage of seasoned musician Dr Mbongeni Ngema’s music company, KZN Music House in Durban.
In 2006, she worked closely with Kalawa Jazmee Records and in that year, she collaborated with Trompies for the release of the classical Kwaito hit single of all time, Malabulabu, and then toured and performed it around the world.

She also performed at the 2006 Germany Fifa World Cup to promote the 2010 South African Fifa World Cup and the following year, she performed in London, alongside Oskido, Spikiri and Professor to promote the Kwaito genre culture.

Her second album, Mudar, and third eBom, were released in 2010 and her current album, I am who I am, has been nominated for the Best Album for the Sama29 awards.

Is she wins, Nkiyase promises to dedicate the award to the late Kwaito Queen, Lebo Mathosa, Mshoza and other Kwaito female artists. She also promised to take the award to her former school, Gresswold, the school of learners who live with mild intellectual disabilities such as dyslexia, a condition she has lived with since birth. This will be a form of encouragement and to inspire them that nothing is impossible and they too can achieve beyond their wildest of dreams and challenges, she said.
