Chillie Boys coach Morgan Mammila exhibits predatory instincts

A new knockout but prizeless cup competition in the form of the Carling Knockout is on the horizon for the premiership sides.

Chippa United coach Morgan Mammila has exhibited predatory instincts in his approach to opponents in the beautiful game of football.

This follows his outburst at the launch of the Black Label Carling Cup and Carling Knockout when he indicated that he was disappointed with the draw of the Carling Knockout as he had wished to be drawn against one of the limping Soweto giants.

On climbing the podium, Mammila, who had been drawn against the unpredictable Stellenbosch, was asked how he felt about the outcome of the draw and never minced his words. “I am disappointed with the draw,” he said.

Asked by programme director Thomas Mlambo why he was disappointed, Mammila retorted, “I expected to get one of the Soweto limpers but it was never to be and my destiny has been sealed to a good side that plays exceptional football.

“Nonetheless, I welcome the outcome of the draw and will have to face the might of Steve Barker’s side and we will prepare well for them. It would have been a blessing if we got one of the hobblers from Soweto.”

Barker said he welcomed the draw and that his side would do its best to prepare accordingly for the Chillie Boys, whom he described as a side that plays exciting football. “We will not undermine them as they are equally dangerous as any other side in the premiership.”

The Carling Knockout replaces the Telkom Knockout that disappeared from the football radar more than three seasons ago and its return has been welcomed by premiership clubs.

“This is an added incentive and value of something to look forward to and fight for in our demanding league and keeps both the players’ and fans’ excitement intact for the duration of the marathon season,” said Moroka Swallows coach Steve Komphela.

Though prizeless for now, Premier Soccer League spokesperson Fhatuwani Mpfuni said the prize money for the competition would be announced in due course as it still needed to be finalised with sponsors Carling Black Label.

The draw is as follows:

  • Sekukune United versus Royal AM
  • Orlando Pirates versus Cape Town Spurs
  • SuperSport United versus Polokwane City
  • TS Galaxy versus Mamelodi Sundowns
  • Chippa United versus Stellenbosch
  • Richards Bay FC versus Moroka Swallows
  • Kaizer Chiefs versus AmaZulu FC
  • Golden Arrows versus Cape Town City.
